Glaucoma is caused by a number of different eye issues that result in gradual vision loss due to damage to the optic nerve. The most common eye issue that causes glaucoma is high blood pressure in the eye. While there are no known ways of preventing glaucoma, blindness or significant vision loss from glaucoma can be prevented if the disease is recognized in the early stages.
If you are younger than 40 and have no known risk factors for glaucoma, our optometrists recommend that you have a complete eye exam every 5 to 10 years.
We recommend that people who are at risk for glaucoma have complete eye exams according to the schedule below:
-Ages 40 to 54, every 1 to 3 years
-Ages 55 to 64, every 1 to 2 years
-Ages 65 and older, every 6 to 12 months
