Complete Family Eyecare now offers Optical Coherence Tomography, also known as OCT, which is a non-invasive imaging test. OCT uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina. With OCT, our Optometrists can see each of the retina's distinctive layers and allows us to map and measure their thickness. These measurements help with diagnosis and provide treatment guidance for glaucoma and diseases of the retina.
These retinal diseases include age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and diabetic eye disease. We have invested in this latest technology because we are committed to providing you with the highest standard of eye care available. As the cost of taking an OCT exam is not covered under OHIP, the free for this test is $75.
We recommend you undergo OCT at ages 8, 12, 16 and 20 due to low risk. For ages 20 to 50, every two years or less is recommended if any signs of future problems are found. For those ages 50 and up, OCT taken annually is recommended. For persons with glaucoma, diabetes, AMD, cataract, or retinal pathology, it is highly recommended that patients have an OCT taken annually.
Complete Family Eyecare in North York, Ontario is proud to offer OCT as an option for our patients. Optical Coherence Tomography takes only 5 to 10 minutes, and may involved dilating eye drops to widen your pupil and make it easier to examine the retina. You will simply sit in front of the OCT machine and rest your head on the support while not moving. The scanner will scan your eye without touching it.
